How to Become a Mud Runner

Most of us run because we are told that it is a healthy outlet for stress, which is true. But does that mean we have to like it? Well no. I am here to admit that I don't like running and actually have to force myself to do it. If you feel the same way then I would like to help you and save you from your boredom. Let me introduce to Mud Running. It changed my life for the better and I am sure it will do the same for you.

As you already know, I find running extremely boring and only run as an outlet for stress but that wasn't enough and I was ready to give it up and look for another hobby. Then my friend convinced me to sign up for a Tough Mudder and with that, my life was forever changed.
Mud runs, mud races, mudders, or whatever they are called, are great ways to get the unengaged runner engaged. These races are setup to encourage teamwork through obstacles that they have littered throughout the course. This means, that you rely on teammates and other competitors on the course, during the race.
Mud runs range in their distance, starting at 3.1 miles (5K), going up to 24 miles (marathon distance). Be sure to check out your race's distance before committing. If you are a novice runner you probably want to start at the shorter races and build yourself up. Warrior Dash is by far the most popular but there are plenty of other options for races. Some are run nationally (like Warrior Dash) and some locally (just Google Mud Run and the name of your city). Here are the top 3 and a little about each:
Tough Mudder: Developed by a pair of ex British Special Forces officer. These mud runs usually range between 10 to 12 miles in distance. This is most popular of the long distance mud runs. Be ready to plunge into ice water, crawl through yards of thick mud, climb 8 foot walls, and run through wires that carry up to 10K volts of electricity.
Spartan Race: The Spartan Race is broken out into series of races all varying in their distances (3 miles, 8 miles, 12 miles). These mud runs are designed to get you dirty but also test your motor skills. Have you ever thrown a spear? No? Well enter a Spartan race and you will get that opportunity. Fail to hit a target or complete an obstacle, they have someone at each station to enforce a penalty (usually a certain amount of burpees). By the end the race you will be muddy and feel soreness in every last one of your muscles.
Warrior Dash: As I said above, the most popular mud run on the market right now. Each Warrior Dash is 3.1 miles or (5K) and include about 10 to 12 obstacles. This is a great race for beginners or anyone else who just wants to try a mud run. The obstacles may seem intimidating at first but as long as you have trained beforehand should not a be a problem.
As you can see all of the events are designed to be hands on and a lot of fun. Normally these events promote a festival like atmosphere with music, events, and food trucks. So if you are looking for a way to shake up the old boring running regime, then sign-up for a mud race. You won't be sorry!
