Constructing a Strong Immune System With Nutrition and Herbs

The immune system is probably the most complex system of our entire body. It is constantly working within our bodies and protecting us from our external environment. Throughout our entire body, we find components of the immune systems in our organs, bone marrow, cells, antibodies. This system protects us from a multitude of threats including: viruses, bacteria, fungi, yeasts, cancer cells and foreign proteins. (Symbiotic relationships between foreign organisms with body's own cells support immune function)

Two kinds of immunity are provided by our immune systems, innate nonspecific immunity and acquired immunity. So many things can affect our immune system's abilities to function at peak; allergies, infections, cancer, genetics and more. Balance is key to immune system health, but unfortunately many factors can work to suppress it. Aging, allergies and infections can reduce immune competence. Cancer, surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and antibiotic therapy can all weaken immunity.
Immune function can also be suppressed and weakened by the following: infection, stress, emotional and psychological experiences, chemicals and drugs, environmental pollutants and nutritional deficiencies.
Selenium is best absorbed when consumed with Vitamin E. The best Vitamin E rich source would be sunflower or safflower oil which are polyunsaturated fats and have 65-70% linoleic acid which is also good for immune support. The richest source of selenium is the Brazil nut. A single nut contains the recommended daily value of selenium intake.
The nutrient pair of Vitamin A and zinc are needed for cellular immunity and the pair of Vitamin E and selenium stimulate antibody production. The B vitamins also help with antibody production, B6 being the most important. Iron and copper help increase resistance to infection and copper can balance out zinc, but too much of either can be immunosuppressive.
While consuming all of your body's nutrients through food is the best way and they are the most easily assimilated in this form, a multivitamin that includes these antioxidants and essential vitamins and minerals will provide additional support.
When coming down with a cold or the flu or an infection, it is best to increase intake of Vitamin A via supplementation to 25,000-50,000 IU, Vitamin C to 4-8 grams and zinc to 50-100 mcg. Adding garlic, a natural antibiotic and goldenseal to improve immunity through tonification is also advised. Ginseng tea or non-alcohol extract will help rebuild energy as you recover and licorice root should be used for stress related immune problems by supporting energy and adrenal balance and interferon production.
Medicinal mushrooms such as, shiitake, maitake and reishi provide immune system support through compounds known as beta-glucans which activate the immune system.
Olive leaf contains the compound oleuropein, which exhibits antibacterial, antiviral and anti-fungal properties, making it useful for fighting various types of internal infections.
Utilizing these powerful phytonutrients will boost and support optimum immune function, helping you overcome infection. Start consuming nutrient dense foods as part of your regular diet to build a healthy immune system and supplement with immune strengthening herbs at the first sign of infection or illness and you will soon find yourself experiencing vibrant health.
