Hoarding in America

If you have not noticed, hoarding has been on the Internet, television news and in the local newspapers a lot lately. It seems that hoarding is a bit more complicated than first originally suspected. It is considered a serious mental disorder for some, but for others, it is a very serious mental illness. It can be extremely dangerous for the victim and possibly even their loved ones as well (including the victims pets). If not approached and handled properly and professionally, a hoarder can fall into a deep depression, become violent or even suicidal. Noticing a hoarder is a lot easier than having to deal with one.

When trying to help those who suffer from hoarding, it is recommended to get in contact with those who specialize in this disorder. More damage can be inflicted if not handled properly, making it near impossible to give the help that is so desperately needed. It some sever cases, the hoarder has violated some city code or ordinance where the authorities are now completely involved. City authorities are only concerned with the well-being of the victim, the victim's land and property and the surrounding neighbors and residents. There is little concern in the victim's mental status and condition.
It is a long and lengthy process when providing the necessary care when dealing with a hoarder. Fact is, the longer the person has been in denial that they have a problem; the harder it will be to have the victim admit he or she has a problem. Once you have convinced them and they honestly believe that they have a problem, you have successfully completed the first step to recovery. Please remember this when providing help - always be considerate of victims' personal belongings. Although these items are probably on its way into dumpsters or to be sold at different resale shops around town, this is a very dramatic experience for these people. So dramatic in fact, that in some incidences, the victim had to actually be placed in medical care.
Most sufferers of this terrible, yet mysterious disease are usually elderly and it has been recommended that they not be around when the clearing out the victim's home begins. Serious injury is mostly obtained by elderly people climbing through dumpsters trying to retrieve and save what was once theirs and considered very important. Every item a hoarder collects has special meaning to them. Mostly these items reflect something in the victim's life that they sadly miss. Throwing these items away into dumpsters is a very painful, emotional and troublesome experience; it reminds the victim of whatever pain that they had to deal with once before - and for such a long time.
