If you feel thirsty, you drink water. If you feel hungry, you eat food. If you feel cold, you put on a jacket. Human beings are truly great problem solvers. We readily recognize solutions to issues we are experiencing and happily implement those solutions to improve our lives. But for some strange reason there is one solution we universally refuse to accept and that is exercise.
Think about exercise for a moment. If you are feeling slow, lethargic, lazy and generally have a lack of energy, the solution is exercise. We know this. So why do we turn to detoxification, pills, diets and other alternative solutions when the one obvious thing we need is right in front of us?
It just seems to be human nature. If you are hungry, you want to eat. If you are lazy, the last thing you want to do is workout. It is totally understandable. Exercise may be the obvious solution but it isn't always an easy one.
That is why we tell ourselves lies in order to feel better. We make excuses as to why we can't exercise. We've all done it. Everyone has been there. And unfortunately most people actually believe the lies.
One of the most common excuses people have for not exercising is that they lack some necessary and essential item for working out. Here are three things people tell themselves they need and why they don't really need them.
1. Exercise Equipment
Fitness equipment like treadmills, elliptical trainers or exercise bikes certainly make working out more convenient, but they are not necessary. In many cases they are not even effective. Some of them are so loaded up with games and entertainment features that you can hardly recognize them as exercise machines anymore.
But why would you need a treadmill to run? Can you not run outside? If outside isn't an option, why not run in place? Why not do mountain climbers on the floor? There are plenty of alternatives.
2. Supplements
Many people think they need some kind of protein powder or specialty shakes in order to get in better shape. This is not true. Your body is equipped with everything it needs to be fit. An average diet contains more than enough protein.
Lately there are all kinds of weight loss pills and other supplements available on infomercials and online. These are almost universally a waste of money. Your body doesn't need them and often they say they only work with a good diet and exercise. It's actually the good diet and exercise that pays dividends, not the pills.
3. Time
If you have time to get out of bed then you have time to exercise. When you walk from the couch to the refrigerator, try doing lunges instead of normal walking. If you are going to the store park farther away to get more steps. If you sit at a desk try holding your feet off the ground for as long as you can.
Time is something we all have, and we all have the same amount of it each day. The problem is we view exercise as an event that requires 30 straight minutes of time. It doesn't have to be that way. Go about your day and make adjustments to how you do things so that you burn more calories doing what you already do.
We all know we need to exercise. Let's put away the excuses and stop lying to ourselves about what we need in order to exercise. Just get up and do it. You won't regret it.
